Description:

The Pooley Pinot Noir 2025 from the Coal River Valley in Tasmania is a fragrant, medium-bodied cool-climate red, built on bright red fruit and fine tannin rather than power. Presented in magnum, this Tasmanian Pinot Noir carries the perfume and drive the region is known for, with the slower maturation a 1.5L bottle allows.

Red cherry, cranberry and a little wild strawberry lead the aroma, with rhubarb, dried thyme and a faint forest-floor savouriness sitting underneath. The palate follows suit — sappy and juicy through the middle, with pomegranate and blood orange lifting the fruit rather than weighing it down.

Tannins are fine-grained and gently gripping, framing a wine of real clarity and length. Acidity runs the length of the palate and keeps everything taut, finishing dry, savoury and long, with a twist of pink peppercorn on the close.

Pour it with duck breast, mushroom risotto, roast pork with fennel, or a board of charcuterie and washed-rind cheese. As a magnum it earns its place on a long table — enough for six to eight glasses at a shared dinner, and a format worth opening when the meal deserves an occasion.

Drinking well from release and best across the next eight to ten years. Magnums age more slowly than standard bottles, so expect this one to hold its fruit and gather forest-floor complexity a touch later than the 750mL.
