Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling auslese / 2024 / 375mL
Description:
The Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2024 is a sweet, feather-light Mosel Riesling in which the sugar is carried by acidity rather than weight. Bottled in 375mL, it is a half bottle built for two people and a dessert rather than a cellar full of good intentions.
Aromas run to white peach, apricot skin, mandarin and a lick of wet slate, with honeysuckle and a faint smoky note underneath. The palate is sweet but not thick, all yellow stone fruit and quince, the fruit lifted by lemon zest and a saline, mineral edge that keeps everything moving.
Acidity does the structural work here, drawing the wine long and narrow across the tongue and cutting the residual sugar so the finish reads fresh rather than syrupy. Texture is silky, the alcohol low, and the aftertaste lingers on citrus pith and stone. The 2024 season across the Mosel produced wines on the lighter, more agile side, and that shows in the Juffer Sonnenuhr's delicacy and pace.
Serve well chilled with a fruit tart, poached pear, crème brûlée or a wedge of blue cheese. It also has the sweetness and acid to handle chilli-laced Thai and Sichuan dishes, and a half bottle stretches neatly across a table of four at the end of a meal.
Drink now through to around 2040, keeping in mind that a 375mL bottle matures faster than a 750mL, so expect its honeyed, kerosene-tinged maturity to arrive several years earlier.
