Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Carte d'Or / 2023 / 375mL
Description:
The Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Carte d'Or 2023 is a golden, sweet Chenin Blanc from the Coteaux du Layon in France's Loire Valley, built on freshness as much as sugar. Bottled in 375mL, it carries around 99 grams per litre of residual sugar yet finishes clean rather than cloying.
Aromas run to honey, quince and dried apricot, with lifted tropical fruit — mango and pineapple — sitting over white flowers. The palate is unctuous through the middle, all candied citrus and yellow stone fruit, before a saline, mineral streak pulls everything back into line.
Acidity is the making of this Carte d'Or: bright, almost tart, cutting cleanly through the sweetness so the wine tastes vivid rather than heavy. Texture is silky without being thick, and the finish is long, citrus-edged and dry in impression.
Serve it well chilled with blue cheese, a tarte tatin, lemon tart, or roast duck with fruit. It also works as an aperitif on its own, and the half bottle is the sensible pour here — enough for two or three glasses after dinner without committing to a full 750mL you will not finish, and a good option for a single sweet-wine course at a dinner party.
Drinking beautifully from now to around 2035, though bear in mind a 375mL matures faster than a full bottle, so this one will reach its honeyed, developed phase earlier than its larger sibling.
