Black Guts Shiraz 2021, here in a 375mL half bottle, is Rusden's well-known old-vine Shiraz from the Barossa Valley's Vine Vale sub-district, poured at a size that suits a smaller table. It carries the same dark, powerful character as the full-size bottling, just in a format built for two, deeply coloured and dense from the first pour.

Blackberry, black plum and dark chocolate sit over liquorice, clove and a savoury, earthy depth typical of old Barossa vines. There is a warm, spiced richness that fills the glass as it opens.

The palate is full-bodied and dense, with firm, ripe tannins and a long finish that carries real intensity. Nothing about the smaller format changes the wine's weight or seriousness in the glass.

The half bottle is the practical draw here - open it for a solo dinner, a midweek meal for two, or whenever a full 750mL would mean wine left unfinished on the bench. It is poured, not saved, and drinks just as well as its bigger sibling from the moment it is opened, matching well with a simple steak or a wedge of hard cheese.
